About Us
Since 1973, the Humanist Association of San Diego has been a Chartered Chapter of the American Humanist Association, serving the needs of Humanists and other Free Thinkers in San Diego County and the surrounding areas. In order to meet the dynamic needs of our community we engage in social, educational, and political advocacy events and activities.
If you enjoy weekly discussion groups, we offer the best Saturday Night Discussion group in town. Our Coffee & Conversations will uplift your spirit, enrich your mind, and keep you abreast of all the latest news and ethical issues affecting Free Thinkers (Atheists, Agnostics, Brights, Humanists, Skeptics, and the like). To keep us on our toes we are regularly visited by members of the faith based community. We welcome everyone, and encompass a vast spectrum of political attitudes, slants, and affects. Outside of the mind, we like to get physical with regular hiking, whale watching (3 years consecutive), snorkeling, and horse shoe pitching. We will even teach you to play horseshoes!
One of the greatest facets of the Secular Humanist life-stance is a commitment to social justice advocacy. When tens of thousands took to the streets to protest the religious-based discrimination of proposition 8, we were there. Our Humanist Celebrant, Jason Frye, was invited to give the Humanist invocation the day that the City Council voted to reject their support of the initiative. We have promoted the separation of Church and State from fighting the Soledad Cross to standing with Scouting For All. We’ve marched for 13 consecutive years in the San Diego GLBT Pride Parade, and participated in the Earth Day celebration.
We also retain the services of San Diego’s only American Humanist certified Humanist Celebrant for your rites of passage needs – Marriage, Memorials, and Baby namings included. We host a stirring monthly lecture series which has featured traveling lecturers such as Dr. Joe Nickell (renown supernatural investigator) and Dr. Darrel Ray (author of the God Virus). We organize lecture trips. This last year included Richard Dawkins, Michael Shermer, and Freeman Dyson. Our past efforts have included performing the largest GLBT wedding in history and hosting events with Carl Sagan and Steve Allen.
So whether you like to get outdoors to hike, hit the pavement to fight for social justice, enrich your mind through incredible lectures, or like to make a lot of great friends through weekly discussions, The Humanist Association of San Diego is your group! We hope to see you at one of our upcoming meetings.
